Interview with Dr. Nadia Malik, Optometrist who is based in Victoria, British Columbia
At what age should children get an eye exam?
As young as six months old, if the parents notice that the child has an eye turn or that the child is not looking at them or at toys that are directly in front of them. Otherwise, at the age of three, and than again before they enter school. Then children should be examined annually after that to ensure that underlying health conditions do not go undetected. 80% of a child`s learning is through vision; therefore, good eye health is critical to a child’s development.
What are some signs you should look for when wondering if your child has vision issues?
Eye turn
Avoiding books or nearby tasks
Holding objects too close
Itchy, watery eyes
Lack of concentration
Covering or closing one eye
Tilting the head, or unusual posture
Losing place while reading
Performing well below their potential
Will sitting too close to the television set hurt my child’s eyes?
There is no evidence that suggests that the television emits any harmful rays.
How can you ease your child into wearing glasses?
The biggest challenge is how the parent deals with it. If you make it pleasant and fun then chances are the child will be more acceptable to the change. Take your time in choosing the frame and make sure the final choice is made by the child. If the child chooses the frames, they are more likely to wear them.
